WHAT IS IT GOVERNANCE?

Effective IT governance helps ensure that IT achieves its ultimate purpose, that is, to support business goals, optimise business investment in IT, and appropriately manage IT-related risks and opportunities.

The overall objective of IT governance is to understand the issues and the strategic importance of IT, so that the organisation can sustain its operations and implement the strategies required to extend its activities into the future.

IT governance and good IT management go hand-in-hand and wraps a framework around IT to help ensure the management process and ensuing results are producing the RIGHT business outcomes at the RIGHT time and at the RIGHT cost.

IT governance addresses these main areas of IT activity:

STRATEGIC ALIGNMENT focuses on ensuring the linkage of business and IT plans: on defining, maintaining and validating the IT value proposition; and on aligning IT operations with company operations.

VALUE DELIVERY is about executing the value proposition throughout the delivery cycle, ensuring that IT delivers the promised benefits against the strategy, concentrating on optimising costs and proving the intrinsic value of IT.

IT RESOURCE MANAGEMENT is about the optimal investment in, and the proper management of, critical IT resources: applications, information, infrastructure and people.

RISK MANAGEMENT requires risk awareness by senior company officers, a clear understanding of the company’s appetite for risk, understanding of compliance requirements, transparency about the significant risks to the company, and embedding of risk management responsibilities into the organisation.

PERFORMANCE MEASURMENT tracks and monitors strategy implementation, project completion, resource usage, process performance and service delivery, using, for example, balanced scorecards that translate strategy into action to achieve goals measurable beyond conventional accounting.
